Gunsoul is now available for purchase on Amazon and Audible!

Marauders shot Yuan in the head and buried him in a ditch. They thought it would be enough to put him down. They were wrong.

Rising from the dead by the will of the Gun, demigod of revenge and firearms, Yuan only has one goal in mind: track down his murderers across the Unmade World and slaughter every last one of them. With the bullet-core stuck in his skull marking him as a Gunsoul, he can finally teach these arrogant cultivators a lesson they’ll never forget.

But revenge isn’t so easy to claim. To carve out a path through the wasteland, Yuan will have to face power-hungry sects, nuclear cultivators, and weapon-gods. Let them come. No one will bury him again.

He’ll give them all a taste of Bullet Hell.

Current schedule: Daily chapters from Monday to Friday.

I'm not going to lie. I never expected Void to dive into the cultivation genre, much less infuse it with Isekai. Most stories that follow this genre feel similar with established motivations and goals for their MCs. But Void went out of his way to infuse this with a Mad Max Post-Apocalyptic spin that is unique and stands out.

The progression is pretty good. I'm hoping to see a little more backstory for the MC. Anyway, it's a Void Herald Book. Even if you're not a fan of these genres, give it a chance. Voidy's books always stand out.

I’m really liking how this thing is going. Fantasy revolving around weapons is never done, but here it’s beautifully and intricately integrated into the main cultivator themes.

The fights are great, entertaining, and at a great pace so it’s exciting, but slow enough so you know whats going on.

Can’t wait to see where this novel is headed!

If a western, a xianxia fic, and Enter the Gungeon had a three-way, this is the baby they would produce.

As with Maxime's other work, the world is unique, engaging and lovingly crafted, and feels like a real breath of fresh air compared to the endlessly-regurgitated stock settings found in most stories on this website. In this story in particular, the mashup of classic western and xianxia elements really takes center stage, resulting in such features as herds of spirit-cars running (driving?) wild across the plains, transhumanist cyborg cultivator sects, Young Masters riding dirt bikes, a bog where the energy of a departed cultivator causes bullets to literally grow on trees, and, of course, the Gun. There's a lot of Gun. The combat is also wonderfully written and really reminds me of Chainsaw Man for some reason, and the cultivation system is familiar while introducing a few nice thematic reflavors and twists. This story gets 5 stars for style, no question.

The plot and the characters are a little weaker so far - nothing bad, but nothing outstanding either. So far it's a fairly standard quest for revenge and greater power with a protagonist who, while serviceable, lacks a really striking personality that would make him engaging. So far this has been fine, since as I said the story so far has been focusing mostly on its setting, but it's an area that could see improvement. 4 stars for both story (plot) and characters.

Finally, the grammar is impeccable (or close enough that I never notice). 5 stars.

Overall, this is an excellent story and one I highly recommend you at least try reading.

a unique take on the cultivation genre

Reviewed at: 85: The End (Epilogue)

western meets mad max and has a romp with xianxia.

a well told story of revenge, found family and struggle for power.

the author balances the story well, and doesn't skimp on pacing. interesting characters and cool fight scenes make for an brisk read. amidst endless novels that take three books for the mc to get out of their room, this is a breath of fresh air.

highly recommended.

What do you get if you take Mad Max and throw in Cultivator Bullshit? An awesome setting that's what! And great story to play out in it! A classic story of revenge, and of a rough guy with a kid. Classic stuff, but hey, they're classic for a reason, because they Work. And you can trust Void Herald to provide the good writing.

My first review in a while but this story deswrves the boost, was hooked since chapter 1 but the the 12 chapter release drop is certainly a big help lol.

I really liked this story, lots of weapons, lots of action, I absolutely recommend it!!

I'm not a fan of cultivation or xianxia but I really liked this story, another great work by Void.

My favorite character was Yuan Guang, I also liked Orient and Holster.

The story is now complete and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to read a short cultivation story.

Gunsoul was a fantastic read from start to finish. Zero fluff, well paced with interesting characters and a solid plot from start to finish. Yuan's goal and character was clear from the start, even as it evolved as his world view grew.

My two, very minor, complaints are that the side characters could have had a little more fleshed out since they were interesting people, and that the story was longer (but only cause I wanted more Gunsoul content).

The world written was super interesting and expansive, multiple stories could be told in it quite easily, with so much more history and world to explore.

No grammar faults as far as I could tell.

All in all, a great read! Gunsoul would make for a fantastic manga or TV show. I look forward to coming back to this story in a year or two to read it again 😁

What if Mad Max and XianXia made love violently?

Reviewed at: Gunsoul Audiobook launch on Audible (final update)

You may look at the title, and think: is this reviewer mad? The answer is a little.

But so will you be when you'll have finished Gunsoul!
For this fiction is not just a fiction, it is a high octane drive through the blasted wasteland of the Fanged Coast! It is searing iron and burning lead! Raw energy and pulsing qi! A blast of fresh air, gunsmoke and leaded blood!

On a less deranged note, this fiction is great!

In terms of grammar, it is nearly faultless. I may have been able to spot at most two or three errors. Quite remarkable when you consider the damn thing is 600 pages long.

The style can be summarised in one word: sleek. Nothing is out of the way. The pacing is great, you're rarely bored while appropriate space is made for downtime.

The story in itself doesn't reinvent the wheel, but the narrative framework in which it's in gives it a great amount of flavour and uniqueness, not to mention the tight-knit lore that's dropped here and there much to my delight. Moreover, the conclusion is carried out in a very satisfying manner, and doesn't leave with a sour aftertaste. In fact, I just want more.

Characters are a tad too one dimensional for my liking, but their arc is executed very well, and each character we come to know manages to grow outside of its stereotype, with some really cool backstory to boot.

All in all, Gunsoul is more than the sum of its parts. It's a cluster of great ideas all arranged and interlinked very well, bringing to life a world and a story like nothing else I've read so far.

More Like a Battle Manga Than a Xianxia

Reviewed at: 17: The Bullet of Victory

And that's a good thing.

While the story is a cultivation I am also reminded of battle shonen manga with its sense of action, expanding fantasy world, and its hinted multitude of different powersets and enemies to have cool fights with and I think it gives the story a charm to people who like to read battle manga.

Void has freed himself from litrpgs stats, screens, and numbers. The end result is faster, tenser, less predictable fights against opponents who aren't limited by such ironclad power levels creating beautiful fights that would be right at home in Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man.

The Thunderlands arc is Void testing the waters and freeing himself from needing to put stat screens in his fights. I’ve had access to some advance chapters from Patreon, so I’ve been able to read the next arc early, and that’s where the story really picks up for me. Bigger, badder, more competent villains are introduced, the plot thickens, the overarching mysteries of the setting and the myth arc show up and we delve deeper into the power system. Past a certain point, fights get really intense and high-stakes.

The currently implied or related Sects like the Nuclear Path or the Gun also imply a wide variety of powers and setpieces in the future so that every fighter will stand out as their own personal threat as well even if they start from the same place. For Yuan himself, he's self-centered but not a murderous maniac, and there are clear hints that there's hints for positive growth there and he owns the Wolf & Cub dynamic with Holster with a third character appearing very son to further enhance their dynamic..

As an advanced patron, I will also say that the Thunderlands are just the calm before the storm. Yuan meets his core supporting cast in the next arc giving our fighting shonen hero far more material to work with to craft ideological conflicts and battles.

Amazing rock and roll story!

Reviewed at: 85: The End (Epilogue)

Amazing story! I picked this up a couple of weeks back after rereading the perfect run. Another amazing story, in its own way I would say even better! Actio. Packed story with some great twists and turns. A lot of world building packed into a few chapters. But just the right amount without being overwhelming.

I would love to see more from this world, defo would buy a video game!  hopefully in time :)
